Attendance and Punctuality

Poor attendance at school has been linked to poor performance in SATs, GCSE and other National examinations. Only 10% of persistent truants obtain 5 grade A*- Cs compared with 58% of non truants.

It seems common sense that students who are not in classes cannot be taught. However, the effect is worse than just being absent for that day, as a student who is absent has to catch up what they have missed and can often spend a week trying to pick up from where they left off. If they miss the start of a project they will not know what is expected of them during that project. They will find it very difficult to hit their targets and achieve their full potential.

If students are late to lessons they will not know what is expected of them in that lesson and they will disrupt the learning of others which is not acceptable.

Consequences of poor attendance may result in fixed penalty fines or prosecution from the Education Welfare Service. If your child has problems relating to attendance you can always contact our Attendance Officer or Education Welfare Officer for advice or support.
